What is a coffee grinder?

Best Coffee Grinders are a critical piece of equipment and are used in extracting the aroma, flavor and taste from coffee beans, allowing for the brewing great tasting, and high quality coffee. In many cases, the grinder is the crucial aspect to the equation of a great cup of coffee, though most people believe that the coffee machine is the star of the show.

Freshly ground coffee will always provide the freshest tasting coffee , and if used immediately you will get optimal results in taste and aroma. Otherwise coffee that’s shelved will oxidize, and become stale.

Find the Best Coffee Grinder for that Perfect Cup

We do not realize that Coffee’s flavor comes from the oils in roasted beans, and those oils need to be released evenly for the best-tasting coffee. So it has been proven that in order to extract the flavor from the beans as effectively as possible, and that means starting with a sustainable  coffee grinder that grinds evenly. This is very important.

If you’re a coffee connoisseur like me you’ve p0ssibly invested in a nice coffee maker and some high quality beans. But you may have overlooked the importance of the grinder, and its role in producing the final flavor you’ll be sipping. But of course, you would not have to worry about coffee, or grinders if you buy processed coffee from the grocery store….

Gourmet Coffee connoisseurs understands that the perfect grind will always be the key to the perfect cup of coffee or espresso. The best coffee grinders deliver a consistent grind, offer convenient functions and features, and have lower noise levels.

Why use a coffee grinder?

It’s a simple answer, flavor! As previously mentioned, Coffee’s flavor comes from the oils in roasted beans, and those oils need to be released evenly for the best-tasting coffee. So you want to extract the flavor from the beans as effectively as possible, and that means starting with a good coffee grinder.

A quality grinder ensures the ground coffee doesn’t clump together, keeps the beans cool while grinding and helps evenly distribute coffee as its being processed.that perfect cup

Is it worth buying a coffee grinder in the long run? The smells and taste is much better and fresher, and yes, you’ll value it in the long run. Some coffee drinkers will buy the pre-ground stuff, which is OK, bur by the time you get half-way down the bag, the brewed coffee starts to lose its flavor over time.

You can’t let the air get to fresh ground coffee for long, or it goes stale. Its just the part of the oxidation process.

So, what I’m saying is that a good grinder will transform your coffee experience from the inside out. Your coffee will be more flavorful and delicious. You will know the difference in your coffee’s flavor and strength. You’ll be able to brew coffee that rivals your favorite espresso shop. And that will make you looking forward every morning for that top notch cup of Joe.

The importance of brewing coffee soon after grinding

At this point we need to understand that, the grind,  is just as important as the coffee itself. When it comes to making that perfect coffee, the grind plays a major role in the coffee making process. The complex compounds within your coffee beans are what create your brew’s aroma and flavor. Not all of these compounds are very stable, which means that they can change quickly because of oxidation.

Through oxidation, a process by which compounds interact with air molecules to create different molecules, causes certain desirable flavor and aroma compounds to be released from your coffee beans. When you grind your beans, you kick start this oxidation process, which is a good thing if you brew right away, but not if you shelf the coffee for a while.

Once those coffee beans mixes with oxygen, it begins to lessen their flavor and make them smell different almost immediately by causing coffee soluble to either degrade and oxidize, which means loss of flavor over time. As a gourmet coffee aficionado I always investigate the best coffee grinders reviews, to check and see any new process that helps the coffee brewing process.

What kind of coffee grinders are there?

Blade Grinders

All blade grinders have a double-pronged blade in the center of the grinder that looks similar to that of a normal every day blender. It spins rapidly breaking all the raw coffee beans into smaller pieces, usually with one button and one speed, but the result from these grinders is that  do not grind evenly which affects the quality of coffee.

There are other types of grinders which is important to know, and which I’ll go over for you.

Burr Grindersburs-in-grinder

A burr grinder works like a pepper mill where coffee beans pass through two metal objects to be ground into small pieces. The grind size is precisely controlled, regardless of how many settings, and the results are very even. This grinding process generates a fuller, more balanced taste.

Automatic Grinders

Automatic coffee grinders are known for their consistency and efficiency, but this convenience comes with a price tag. These automatic grinders may cost you a bit more than you would with a manual burr grinder. They’re also bulky and need electricity, which obviously cannot be mobile to take on vacations. Electric burr grinders are efficient because they can grind a lot of coffee in a small amount of time and with minimal effort. If you intend to serve fresh coffee to many people every day or if you don’t have the time, this may be your best way to go.

Manual Grinders

If you want freshly ground coffee, but don’t want to break the bank, a manual grinder may be the best option. There are many manual grinders to choose from, and they are a better choice than a low-end electric blade grinder, which will produce inconsistent grinds and not last as long. The manual grinders have the mobility benefit, if you want to take them with you.

Pros

-Consistency of grind

-Simple mechanics

-Affordable

-Portable

-Durable

-Doesn’t need electricity

-Easy to clean

Cons

-Requires some muscle

-Not ideal for grinding large amounts

-Takes a bit of time

-Doesn’t allow for micro-adjustment

Manual grinders are durable and consistent, and will likely outlast most electric powered grinders. If you have a hundred dollars or less to spend on a grinder, go with the manual. You’ll end up with a higher-quality grinder. An electric burr grinder may be best for you if you’re able to make the investment and if you want quality and fast brewing.

If you plan to grind large amounts of coffee, an electric burr grinder could definitely save you a lot of time and labor. Basically, it all depends on which one fits best, your needs and lifestyle.

Conclusion – Grind and Brew

super-automatic-coffee-makerIn my opinion based on research over time, a coffee maker with a grinder is a good idea – you’ll save space and simplify your morning routine. More so than other categories of coffee machines, grind & brew models cover a wide range of options, choices, and prices.

These automatic, or super automatic machines offer a broad selection of features, and different capabilities. It’s important to know whether the one you’re buying will be able to calibrate to different roasts, brew in different ways, or handle the amount of beans you want.

But in my opinion, there are many upsides to getting an inclusive coffee machine with grinding capabilities. Pricing is higher and it varies, but you can find some of these units at affordable prices. One advantage with inclusive coffee makers, is that brewing coffee from raw coffee beans is much cheaper per serving than using single serve K-cups, capsules, or coffee pads. Below are some reasons why automatic coffee machines are excellent coffee makers:

-There’s no need to purchase a separate grinder, justifying the extra cost
-You can enjoy the full flavor potential of your beans because they will be freshly ground every time you brew
-Less effort has to be expended on your part to achieve the perfect brew- the machine does the work for you
-Most have auto on/off with timer settings, so your gourmet cup of coffee is waiting for you in the morning.
-Cheaper to make coffee than single serve coffee makers(i.e. Keurig, Nespresso)

  1. I’m a coffee addict and this really hit the spot! Apparently, the heat generated by electric coffee grinders affects the taste of the final brew. Don’t know if that’s true, but if it is it’s certainly another argument in favour of manual grinders. Loved your article about coffee with alcoholic drinks. There are endless opportunities!

    • Tom, there are many types of grinders available, I have the auto grind and brew type which makes my life simple, and the coffee fresh and aromatic, but those units are not cheap. Glad you like my coffee cocktail article. They taste better than they sound. Thank you for your comments,

  2. I absolutely love freshly ground coffee but I’m on a budget right now. I travel a lot and I appreciate a grinder that can be taken with me. So I believe the option that suits me most is a manual grinder. I don’t mind if it requires some muscle or it takes more time than other grinders.
